“What is the function of heart?” ”What?! Can hearts even be transplanted?” “Would people suffer a risk of changing the heart?” With the stream of questions, the students sat on their seats of East 1B-308 punctually as usual, listening attentively to the lecture delivered by a heavyweight. This handsome teacher on the platform is Zheng Zhe , a Distinguished Professor of Chang Jiang Scholars Program and a National Leading talent in Scientific and Technological Innovation. Invited by Professor Xu Xiao, who is the associate dean of Zhejiang University School of Medicine and the lecturer of general education course organ donation and transplantation-- the relay and continuation of life, Professor Zheng Zhe came to deliver a course Thinking of the heart—heart transplantation for undergraduates. The teaching schedule of this general education course has been in half. In the past few weeks, the students have had a profound understanding and more thinking on the historical development, technological innovation and social ethics of organ donation and transplantation.

October 11, 2018 , the fifth time ‘ Chinese Higher Education Development Network (CHED) ’ annual meeting was held at Xi’an Jiao Tong University, this event takes four days. The meeting agenda is ‘Research Learning and Innovative talent training’, there were about 900 people of higher education scholars, teachers and managers from 200 different universities and colleges get all together at once to put effort on promoting the development of Chinese higher education.‘Chinese Higher Education Development Network (CHED)’ was suggested to establish by 13 Chinese Higher Education Development Centers from China in 2013, the purpose is to put effort on enhance organizations of Chinese higher education, teaching development workers and boost up the communication, sharing, assistance between frontline teachers. CHED annual meeting was held by a standing director unit each year, the topic is always revolves around education development, discussion exchange between different universities, and also to pay attention to upgrade quality of teaching on higher education area.The first time Chinese Higher Education Development Network (CHED)’ annual meeting was held at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2014, the topic is ‘ Concept and Practice of Higher Education Development ’. From 2015 to 2017, Beijing Institute of Technology, University of Science and Technology of China, Fudan University were held different topic separately on the second, third and fourth time CHED annual meeting, the topics are ‘ Innovation on The Way of Teaching—from the center of teacher to the center of student ’, ‘ Goal Oriented Education and Development of Teachers ’, ‘ Promote Innovation and Cooperation of Learning ’. Next year, the sixth time CHED annual meeting topic ’ The Created Education and Personalized Learning ’ will be held at Northeast Normal University.Education Researching Director of Undergraduate School of Zhejiang University, Professor Li HengWei was participated the annual meeting, he attended executive council and host the report of sub-venues. After the decision of organizing committee, the seventh time annual meeting will be held by Zhejiang University, the meeting topic was first set as 'Innovation and Practice of Chinese Higher Education Development in New Era'.

On September 16th, courses for 2018 new full-time teachers of Zhejiang University started and the first training class succeeded. Over 160 full-time teachers formally joined the team of undergraduate education.The Vice President, Luo Jianhong, analyzed the situations of undergraduate education we are facing and declared some expectations towards the new teachers.The Undergraduate School of Zhejiang University will put new training plan of new full-time teachers into effect since 2018 to improve the quality of the training.

The course final defense of Creative Design was successfully held in College of Civil Engineering and Architecture (CCEA), Zhejiang University on September 13. The course teachers, Prof. ZHAO Yuxi, Prof. DUAN Yuanfeng, Prof. LI Yuchao, Associate Prof. MENG Tao, Associate Prof. ZHANG Dawei and the course student representatives, together with Mr. ZHANG Liang, the vice director of the teaching affairs office of the undergraduate college of Zhejiang University, Mr. MAO Yiping, the researcher of the teaching affairs office of the undergraduate college of Zhejiang University, Prof. LV Chaofeng, the vice dean of CCEA, Ms. ZHANG Wei, the Deputy Chair of College CPC Committee, Ms. JIANG Xiuying, the ex-director of education section of CCEA, Mrs. LU linlin, the director of education section of CCEA, were members of the evaluation panel. The course design theme for this year is "Civil Engineering and Artificial Intelligence". The undergraduates in civil engineering from Zhejiang University, Guizhou University and Tarim University, a total of 77, participated in this course. During the curses, the students thought out of the box and actively explored the integration of civil engineering and artificial intelligence. From brainstorming, model manufacturing, and final presentation, the student teams showed their creative ideas and great sense of collaboration. All the teachers and students on site were led by the teams to imagine the intelligent civil engineering in 2050, deeply impresed by their works, such as the AI moving castle, the flying buildings, the floating space supply stations, the hexagonal rotary farm, the intelligent modular structure et al. At the end of the course defense, the Best Team, the Best-Model team and the Best-Presentationstudent were selected and awarded. Creative design has been developing for ten years. On the occasion of this course’s beginning in the 2018 academic year, the 10th anniversary was held on September 4, 2018. During her visit to Imperial College London, Prof. ZHAO Yuxi, founder of the course, came into contact with the open and cooperative undergraduate teaching model of Imperial College London. After she returned to Zhejiang University, with the support from College of Civil Engineering and Architecture and the department of civil engineering, she organized a young teaching team and set up this course in 2009.With the development of the curriculum, Tsinghua University, Southeast University, Tongji University, Beijing Architecture University, Guizhou University and Tarim University gradually joined, contributing to the development of this course.More about Creative Design, please visit:http://www.oldccea.zju.edu.cn/czxsj/redir.php?catalog_id=11

From July 25th to August 3rd, led by associate professor Li Hongtao, 15 ZJU students from College of Media and International Culture went to Philadelphia and Los Angeles in the US to participate in 2018 ZJU- Huayi Brothers New Media Talent Exchange Program. By cooperating with Huayi Brothers Media Corporation, this international exchange program invited several professors and scholars from Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, to lecture on media and communication frontiers, arranged visits to media organizations and conversations with top filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo, which enabled students to experience media and film atmosphere in Philadelphia. Touching upon Journalism and Communication Frontier at World-Class UniversityThe first lecture of this program began on July 25th, given by Yang Guobin, Chair Professor from Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, who explained how to integrate media research with contemporary Chinese studies and showed the framework and problem awareness of modern Chinese media and social culture research. Later, Doctor Elisabetta Ferrari lectured on political irony on social media and discussed with students social media鈥檚 influence on social movements. Doctor Jasmine Erdener focused on frontier issues of robots and media, visual communication and media and the material world. At last, Doctor Rosemary Clark-Parsons took examples of Me-too Movement and some commercial advertisements to spark students鈥�thinking on gender and media research. All the lecturers, coupled with discussions and interactions, offered a splendid academic feast for ZJU students. Visiting Media Organizations and Experiencing Media IndustryOn July 27th, ZJU students visited 4 media organizations in Philadelphia. Firstly, led by Professor Yang Guobin and Doctor Susan Haas, students visited Comcast, a telecom giant in the US, and learned about its business operations, development history and inclusive diversity philosophy. Later, they came to Philadelphia Media Network, a leading media company in Philadelphia which owns two local newspapers and a website. After discussions on local media and community news, students gained a deeper understanding of community participation and news innovation program. The last two stops were Generocity & Technical.ly, a new media organization focusing on social charity, NPOs and urban life/technology, and Media Mobilizing Project, a grassroot social media organization. Their unique role in reflecting social issues and demands of local community left a deep impression on students, who had witnessed with their own eyes the diverse and inclusive media ecology in Philadelphia and learned more about media transition. Visiting Joe and Anthony Russo Studio and Appreciating Hollywood Film CultureAnother highlight during the stay was visiting Hollywood, where students experienced frontier technology of the film industry and had a face-to-face communication with top American directors Joe and Anthony Russo. ZJU students visited Russo Brothers鈥�Office and talked with them on topics of film making and technology. As Hollywood media professionals, Joe and Anthony Russo pointed out that characters constituted the core of film stories and film making was a process of well integrating various elements. They were excited to see the film and media industry developing like never before and to be able to influence its future. Result PresentationZJU students were divided into three groups and made a final presentation on three topics, including development of film screening technology, a comparative study of Chinese and American Marvel audiences and feminism development in Disney movies, which were judged and commented by two staff members at Russo Brothers鈥�Studio. After discussions among groups, students had known more about breakthroughs in film making and screening technology, different focuses of Chinese and American media on The Avengers and the ever-growing feminism touch in Disney princess movies.In conclusion, this summer exchange program has not only exposed ZJU students to the latest media theories and practices, but also expanded their horizon and knowledge boundary by visiting various media. The 10-day stay in the US covering eastern and western coasts enabled students to gain a deeper understanding of the current international journalism industry and foreign media development. Share:
