Better to Teach Fishing than Give Fish: the First Lunch Saloon Held by the Center of Teachers’ Development in ZJU

     At noon on March 7th the center of teachers’ development invites professor Tang Ruikang, specially recruited according to the “Chang Jiang Scholars Program” of the ministry of education to share and discuss what’s the most appreciative teaching method in Room B 402 In East Building 1 in Zijingang Campus.
   He teaches inorganic chemistry of Qiushi science class in the spare time of scientific research. In face of students in Qiushi science class, he shares his “teaching method” in how to mobilize students’ thinking, i.e. “dividing them into groups with 3 students in class, letting them to reach consensus in their groups after they are given two completely different opinions, and then asking them to debate between groups.”
   “I don’t use computer at all in class, which in fact is more flexible and can be adjusted according to the class.” Students think his class is quite “organic”, for he always drops some questions to inspire their thinking and mobilize the class atmosphere.
   “Let interest accompanies the learning and mastery of knowledge. This kind of teaching method is really extraordinary!” says Chen Kaijiu of the school of international education in saloon, concerning which all teachers present nod their head and they also put forward their ideas. “What kind of students we want to cultivate, in my opinion, lies in their ability to think and their confidence”, says Zhang Miaozhong of school of architectural engineering.
 Since the first teaching academic lecture the center has furthered its guidance to teachers in the form of lunch saloon. Of the form “how to improve teaching methods between first-line teachers in saloon”, Tang Xiaowu, director of special education office in undergraduate school speaks highly, “good teaching method, no doubt will improve the educational achievements”.
