On November 13th vice president Lai Maode met Constance Cook,vice president of University of Michigan responsible for academic affairs. She is also the director of Center for Research on Teaching and Learning of University of Michigan. Both parties conducted a friendly discussion about such topics as cooperating in teaching research and promotion. On September 15th,2010 the executive President Yang Wei investigated the undergraduate schoolinvestigated the undergraduate school. the executive vice-president Lai Maode, the Vice Secretary Zou Xiaodong and Zhen Qiang attended the survey report.All the leaders’ ranks were higher than the Deputy Directors. The executives introduced their work to the chiefs of ZJU at D101 conference room located in East1 Division. At the very beginning of the report, Jin Haiyan, the Secretary of Party Committee in Qiushi College delivered a speech on the management of Qiushi College. The speech was mainly focused on the difficulties lying in the management of students and education Qiushi College underwent since its establishment. It was a warm discussion and several contructive suggestions had been put forward . After the presentation, President Yang acknowledged all the previous efforts to construct the Qiushi College and gave some effectual advice in on the future. President Yang stated that ZJU would make all efforts to support Qiushi College. He hoped that the Undergraduate School would provide a more scientific propose based on the fully awareness of the position and prospect of Qiushi College and submit it to the univeristy assembly.Finally, President Yang listened to the past and future plans of undergraduate enrollment and gave important instructions to 2011's undergraduate enrollment , which required higher demand. The undergraduate education teaching work meeting was held in Sofitel Hotel in Xiaoshan City from August 16th to 17th of 2010. this meeting aims at fully and all-around implement the national medium and long-term educational reform and development program and improve the undergraduate education of Zhejiang University in the spirit of national education work conference. Vice president Lai Maode presided the meeting with vice Party secretary of the university, Professor Zheng Qiang and the vice director of teaching work professor Yan Jianhua present at the meeting, and also present directors of relevant divisions, education department, faculty or department undergraduate teaching and all medium-level officials of undergraduate division and some branch-level officials. His speech revolved around the importance and function of university humanistic education to talents education, emphasizing undergraduate education creating environment for students of learning and researching out of interest and in the process of teaching teachers having sincere feeling about talents cultivation and students education by showing sincerity and care to students. He also pointed out that the next action for Zhejiang University to take would be to better the mechanism and system of university students education management and stressed the importance of practicing general education, thus laying a sound foundation for talents education and intensifying the function of public arts and sports education in university students.Picture 3 vice secretary Zheng Qiang delivering an important speechThen, Yan Jianhua made 3 pieces of advice about how to promote students education teaching work and improve the quality of teaching. Firstly, in this special year, after all-level discussion and research about the education teaching work, undergraduate education teaching work of Zhejiang University had completed its education mechanism through years of reform and development but needed to better its fundamental work and specific details. Secondly, enlightened by leaders’ speech in graduate ceremony reported by media, we should evaluate and improve the teaching thought again. Thirdly, as a system work, student education management needed effort put into by not only undergraduate and graduate division but also cooperation of sectors, departments and faculties. Then they complemented each other on the basis of student-oriented idea.Picture 4. Firstly, the enrolled student quality should be further improved by develop talent potential evaluation system to diversity the students source and give full play to the I plus 1 equal or more than 2. Secondly, the course and system quality should be further heightened by developing curriculum system from more and shallow to less and deep direction, reducing the number and improving the quality of general education courses so that students would have more spare time to think. Reform of specialized courses should follow the same way in concentration on learning based on questions, field, practice and action. The improvement of courses heavily hinged on top-ranking syllabus which must make clear the learning objective, knowledge evaluation, focus and reading material(even the number of pages) of every class, questions discussed and homework and score evaluation. Thirdly, the education and teaching quality should be further evaluated. Any application of education program of a major and syllabus of a course must be strictly approved by anonymous colleagues; course evaluation can be done spontaneously in the last course and the evaluation result should be given to every teacher as a feedback appropriately; the education and teaching management can be evaluated through input, process and output evaluation, realizing benchmarking every year. And the last to be stressed was to increase input into education and teaching, strengthen teachers’ training and education and implement the supporting policies on managing intellectual property of all courses in order to improve the undergraduate education and teaching quality. The report elaborated on seven aspects :1. the enrolment as a flagship 2. student education as the core 3. teacher input as the key 4. policy and atmosphere as the support 5. the teaching method 6. the way to reform teaching method 7. recent work. He first introduced the undergraduate enrolment work in 2010 and future enrolment work in 2011; then he brought forward to simplify course selection, approve the course selected from the recommended class schedule and allocate teacher randomly to make students study and study effectively; he proposed to optimize graduate recommendation and further promote and assure teaching work through graduate recommendation stimulation; he emphasized to intensify students’ comprehensive quality, promote international exchange and subjects contest and practice scientific research; he also recommended Chu Kochen Honors College to control the number of students, develop competition mechanism and intensify its feature. In the meanwhile, he demanded three changes to reform teaching method: from teaching-centered to learning-centered, from class teaching-focused to combination of curricular and extracurricular, from result evaluation-oriented to combination of result and process. Revolving around the theme of the meeting, they had their opinions delivered, researched and discussed about “evaluation and analysis report of Zhejiang University undergraduate education and teaching work in 2009” and the building of undergraduate education evaluation system and frankly shared and discussed their departments’ current undergraduate teaching development, work features and future prospect. First he made four pieces of advice to attendees: 1. be sincere to teaching work 2. be conscientious to learn and implement the spirit of National Long and Short Term Education Reform and Development Program and national education conference, paying special attention to the spirit of the speech given by president Yang Wei in the conference and article collection in the meeting of ZJU undergraduate education teaching work in 2010 3. constantly deepen recognition of undergraduate teaching in relatively stable development to adapt his recognition to the objective and direction of building our university into top-level world university 4. affirm the positive significance of interdepartmental undergraduate education evaluation to the teaching evaluation system building in “evaluation and analysis report of Zhejiang University undergraduate education and teaching work in 2009”, better and promote the evaluation system based on the proposal made in this meeting and rank universities of similar nature to compare the system horizontally and vertically after improving the evaluation program. Later ,Lai Maode delivered important speech centering on 5 aspects: 1. targeting at being top-level in the world and internationally influential. He attached great emphasis to the “one two three” of the university, namely one system, two objectives and 3 requirements. It was in need of a perfect education system with two aims to form future leaders of all fields and create scientific knowledge and culture directing social development; the realization of the two aims demanded professor, facility and building of high quality, but talent is more important: top-level professor top-lever student and the more top-level professor, the more top-level student home and abroad we can enroll.2. we should cultivate top-level talent and advocate professors to “profess”. It was emphasized that every professor took up the least teaching workload and special professor was arranged with the same treatment as Cheung Kong Scholars and Qiushi Distinguished professors. He hoped teachers could put more energy into development of subject and major when not conferred the title of professor and young teacher could gradually become familiar with the field in listening to old professor’s class as an assistant.3. it should focus on undergraduate teaching and perfect general education system. It should make clear that general enrollment needed to be specified to a certain degree, students could choose their majors freely in the general major. We should give full scope to students who were specialized and further perfect the system and mechanism of Truth Seeking School. 4. the education resource should be optimized and the quality of general education improved. It was suggested to check the attendance rate randomly and give paper record of teacher with low attendance rate. A few core general education courses should be opened by top teachers and increased the hours of credit. Enlarged theory classes should combine with small discussion class by assistant teacher. In this way, the class quality could be deepened and teaching quality improved. 5. we should insist on the 4 principles of automation, efficiency, research-orientation and internationalization to promote teaching reform. Program taught in English would help create an internationalized atmosphere; university, department and faculty should create condition for teaching staff to exchange abroad for two, three months or half a year to improve the management. Last but not least, he put forward the problem of term system building. 2010 undergraduate enrolment in national regular institution is entering the admission stage. To further ensure the practice of requirements in enrolment management, discipline check and surveillance, fully implement the Sunlight Project in the enrolment of institutions of higher learning and guarantee the fairness, justice and order in enrolment, the ministry of education held a video meeting about national regular institution enrolment at 15:00 on Jun 30th, 2010. Meeting places of Zhejiang Province and Zhejiang University were arranged in Yuquan Campus.Vice minister Chen Xi delivered a speech, demanding all university and places follow the meeting’s spirit and complete this year’s tasks in enrolment successfully. One of the hot spots paid close attention to by society, the enrolment and admission of institutions of higher learning gets focused on by all-level departments concerned. We should make clear the responsibility, strengthen leadership in enrolment and admission, perfect all management rules and working procedures and constantly perfect the enrolment system adapted to social development in system and mechanism according to the requirements of improving the Party’s work style and building a clean government. The sunlight project should be made a flag to maintain fairness and justice in education battlefront by implementing the sunlight enrolment regulation, expanding the openness, justice and inventing new policies and measures. Undergraduate School won awards in the 5th "Sanyuren" Competiton held by Zhejiang University. Numbers of renowned teachers has gained the titles of "Models of Teaching" and " Models of Management" and a couple of collectivities won awards as well.Professor Lai Maode, Dean of Undergraduate School and Professor Chen Jin, Executive Dean of Undergraduate School won the title of "Models of Teaching".Teachers Zen Chao and Lou Rengong won "Models of Management". Danqing Campus won "Prominent Collectivity" award. Under the guidence of Party Committee of ZJU along with the enthusiam of teachers and students, results of "Sanyuren" Competition finally came out through reccommendation and voting by over 10000teachers and students. At 8:30 on June the 30th, 2010, Symposium on Pomotion of Education Quuality was held successfully in the meeting room 1405 in the library of Zijinggang Campus. Symposium is presided by Professor Lu Guodong, Vice President,Dean of the Undergraduate School and Director of the Teaching and Researching Centre. Chiefs from Ministry of Education and Bureau of Education of ZJU, Professor Lai Maode, Vice President of ZJU, Professor Chen Jin, Executive Dean of Undergraduate School as well as Shan Ling, Director of News Office of ZJU attended the symposium accompanied with journalists from various media.The Symposium started with Porfessor Lai Maode's speech on Education Quality Poject. He pointed out the positive impact of Quality Project on teaching and educational reform. He suggested that universities should put more emphasis on typical examples of Quality Project to promote itself.Afterwards, Professor Lu Guodong, Vice Dean of Undergraduate Student delivered a speech on implementation of Quality Project. In his report, ZJU has established a special group aiming at enhancing educational quality and promoting teaching reform. He clarified the main responsibility of this group, illustrated it with relevant documents and policies. Moreover, he promised a financial support for the Quality Project. Accompanied with patient comments, fascination pictures, Professor Lu introduced to the audience the accomplishments ZJU has achieved on "Quality Project", such as the featured majors, innovation zone and in particular, "Edison Class" and industrialdesign.Ending the Symposium, leaders of Ministry of Education and Bureau of Education of Zhejiang, teachers and students from ZJU and journalists from various media carried out discussions from different perspectives.All members attending the symposium visit the exhibition on Innotive Enducation Achievements of ZJU Undergraduate School. Held jointly by energy and dynamics teaching directing committee of institutions of higher learning and University of Science and Technology Beijing, sponsored by higher education department of the Ministry of Education, the third Nationwide University Students Energy Saving and Emission reduction Social Practice and Science and Technology Contest (NUSESERSPSTC)lasted from august 18 to 20,2010. The final was held in the stadium of the University of Science and Technology Beijing and exhibited some top works of the last two contests. Our university totaled 9 teams into the final, of which 4 had their works exhibited on behalf of Zhejiang University. The representative teams focused on the work scientifically and perform outstandingly in an organized way. We won again 1 Special Prize, 4 First Prize, 4 Second Prizes, 1 Third Prize and the prize for “the best-organized” after the evaluation of experts.Energy saving and emission reduction are important measures the government takes to effectively implement the outlook of scientific development and build a harmonious socialist society during the Five-year Plan. As a major part of “Energy Saving and Emission Reduction University Action”, the Nationwide University Students Energy Saving and Emission Reduction Social Practice and science and technology contest is a nationwide university subject contest. Directive, exemplary, specialized, innovative and practice-oriented, the contest is attached to great importance by nationwide universities of higher learning and signed up for by a number of students. The first and second contests were held respectively in Zhejiang University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2008 and 2009 with 88 universities and 505 works from the start to 169 universities and 1,619 works. In 2010 there are 232 universities and 1,865 works in total for the contest and more and more universities and works take part in the contest with the quality of the works improving a lot. Cen Kefa, the president of the contest committee and an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, abroad then, sent his wish of the contest’s successful holding through the internet for the opening ceremony because his failure to attend it in personMore influential than ever, this contest takes “energy saving, emission reduction and green energy” as theme and require the entries be creative and new real objects making (including models), software, design and social practice research proposal with comprehensive knowledge spanning from energy, mechanics, resource, environment, architecture, electricity, oceanics, control, computer to social science. The first internet and expert panel assessment selected 136 entries all over the country into the final. 3 days of fierce and wonderful competition witnessed the evaluation process of spot exhibition, group defense, spot evaluation and expert panel discussion. Finally expert panel gave the ultimate result which was to be evaluated and released by the contest committee.Under the auspices of leaders of undergraduate division of Zhejiang University and the energy department, effectively organized and directed by the contest practice base and institute, this year’s entry team of our university was of high standard through the competition in the third Zhejiang University contest, many times of training in the university and simulating exhibition and mobilization before the final, besides the spot direction and appraisal from academician Cen Kefa and other experts. During the contest in Beijing, our teams had the widest plan, the most entries and participants but they overcame such disadvantage as adaptation a new place, management of so many students and difficulty of transporting the exhibits. During the fierce and strenuous contest, the 9 entry teams spared no effort persistently, cooperatively and positively. Living up to our expectation, they achieved the best result in our entry history, eclipsing the previous results, wining greater honor for our university. And our university is the highest-level prize winner throughout the holding of the contest.4 real object exhibits of our university’s , “ the joint device of gliding arc discharge and ozone for killing bacteria and virus in the air”(special prize for the 1st contest), “thermoacoustic compressor in low-grade heat”(first prize for the 1st), “free radical forcefully catalyzing filtering remover for the disposal of various pollutants in smoke”(special prize for the 2nd), “joint light, heat, electricity system using light-focusing frequency-dividing solar energy photovoltaic(PV)”(first prize for the 2nd), took part in the third contest’s exhibition for top works in its history and were spoken highly of by the institutions of higher learning and experts, which fully proved our university’s achievements and high standard in organizing and promoting the contest.After bidding by universities, the committee of the contest decided through discussion and evaluation that the fourth nationwide University Energy Saving and Emission Reduction be held by Harbin Institute of Technology(HIT) in 2011 and the flag be granted to HIT by professor Ni Mingjiang in Zhejiang University, deputy president of the contest standing committee in the closing ceremony.Congratulations to the students, tutors, team guide, leaders of energy department, relevant management of division, institute and all staff in practice base of the contest for your excellent results!
