On October 26-27, 2012, The Department ofDigital Media Technology in Zhejiang University was opened to the public on the first floor of the student center in Zijingang Campus. It is the third Open Day of this B.Eng.program of Digital Media Technology of Zhejiang University. This departmentis only eight-year old, and it has seen the graduations of 190 students. 98 of them continued to pursue postgraduate education in homeland well-known universities such asPeking University, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University andZhejiang University and 34 in oversea famous universities including Columbia University, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Southern California, Simon Fraser University, National University of Singapore and The University of New South Wales etc. 53 of them got employed in Tencent, Ubisoft, Taobaoetc., and 7 of them launched their own companies. In the 8 years’ roadmap of setting-up this B.Eng.program, the department adheres to exploring the best-fit approach of interdisciplinary education and comprehensive development of arts and technology for the creative media industry. The Open Day is designed to show to thefreshmen inside the university and the masses from the society the curriculums, work-pieces, ideas and spirits of the B.Eng.program of Digital Media Technology, enhancing the understanding of this young but fascinating program, demonstratingthe exuberance of its characteristics and the grace of its cultures.The Open-day is well prepared.The staff and students from Digital Media Technology Department attended a grand opening ceremony in the student center. Attendees also included leaders of the department and instructors of the courses. Prof. Yue Chen, the vice-dean of theCollegeofComputer Scienceand Technology, Prof. Lieping Peng, the deputy secretary of Department Party, and Prof. Weidong Geng, head of the department all delivered short but brilliant speeches, approvingthis B.Eng.program,emphasizingon the development modeoffocusing on both technology and arts. The instructors also actively joined the activities on the Open Day, givingtheir best wishes to the students of this program.There was a fascinating diversity of activities on the Open Day, which compromised the form of carnival that catered to popular taste. It enabled all the students to join the Digital Media Culture Party through immersing in games and interactive devices. Students from other majors took an active part in the activities and enjoyed themselves on the Open Day. Besides, the staff and students fromJiangnanUniversity, Xi'an University of Technology, Zhejiang Gongshang University, Zhejiang University of Technology and other universities also came to visit the Open Day ,and exchange their ideas and prospectivewith the staff in Zhejiang Universityon how to better develop the digital media technology program .From the big screen in the entrance that playeda short video of the brief introduction of Digital Media Technology Program, the visitors began to feel the vigor of this major. Posters on the display wall guidedvisitors toward five areasof the exhibition---course introductions, interactive experience, graphic works showcase, animation demonstrationand amazing game experience. Not only students came to visit, but also kids withparents accompanied them. People immersed in the excitement of the games, marveled at the delicatedesign of interactive devices, delighted by the amazing animation shows, and attracted bythe elaborated graphic works. Participant that completed the activityin each region also had the opportunity to receive special souvenirs designed by students of digital media department. In the midst of laughter, people had more understanding and appreciation of both the achievements and the culture of Digital Media Technology Program.Each piece of work is marvelous.Here is a FPS game whose scene exactly imitates the real sceneofZhejiangUniversityand gives students a sense of familiarity (Produced by Jin Shihao, Li Hongjie, Liu Yilun, Cui Hong, Abulikemu)In contrast with the former one, girls seem to like create game with more lovely buildings and easier operation. This game is small, quick to handle and quiteartistic (Produced by Wei Wei, Liu Bing, Zhang Shuzhe, and Zhu Yingzhen) Interactive devices like Kinect are popular these days, and the following interactive game successful attractsmany people no matter young or old. What you have to do is to lean your body and stop the drunk from falling down. Excellent rendering and particles are its highlights (Produced by Ke Shenyao, Shentu JIhui) And here is another animation which uses the technique of motion capture. It shows a picture of a beautiful girl dancing. (Produced by Wang Zejia, Zhi Yiting, Yu Jingnan, Binuer, Shentu Jihui) The students only spend four years in this B.Eng. program, the time is limited,however they got a creative mind from this program. They finished a lot of excellent pieces of works with their full passion and inspiring ideas, and finally are equipped with unlimited innovation capability The Open Day caters to the people with curiosity to Digital Media Technology, along with people who have full interests; at the same time, it also offers a platform for people to share and communicate their prospective in Digital Media Technology. We believe that this Open-Day will contribute to a sophisticated understanding of Digital Media Technology from the society, and lead this young major to a bright future!

On April 25th the Center of Teachers’ Development invites Lu Guodong, deputy president of undergraduate school in ZJU to give a lecture on How to Organize Course Examination in Room 107 in West Building 1 of Zijingang with over 60 teachers attending the lecture from subjects like science, engineering, agriculture and medicine. Prof. Lu first gives an introduction of the current situation of undergraduate course examination with regards to average scores of undergraduate course examination in the university and exam paper spot-test of academic term between 2010 and 2011. It is pointed out that some contents in the paper are too easy to enlighten students and display their strengths. And excessively high averages score f course exam must be paid attention to. Next he introduces the essentials of course exam and explains the basic requirements by introducing several classic cases in examining math, physics and biology.Prof. Lu also underlines that the basic task of university classroom should guide students to think, analyze and learn actively.Then he gives a specific elaboration over how course reform promotes teaching reform in two aspects of the thought and objective of course examination reform and stresses that not only should surface exam model be standardized but also point exam model should be deepened. He points out that course exam aims to shift from teaching-orientation to student-orientation, from classroom-dominance to extracurricular and intracurricular combination and from result evaluation-dominance to the combination of result and process.In addition he introduces the approved contents of classroom teaching reform project of higher education in the ministry of education in Zhejiang Province, showing how to promote teaching reform and encourage all teachers to take an active part in teaching reform project in six aspects of facing the classroom, reforming the model, reducing teaching, strengthening extracurricular contents, focusing on the process and underlining the effects. In the meanwhile he describes how teaching management promotes teaching reform by his thought concerning students’ evaluation of teachers.In the last question link teachers put forward their puzzle and questions and Prof. Lu gives detailed solutions, ending the lecture.

On April 14th, 2012 the ninth collegiate programming contest in Zhejiang Province is held in Computer Center in Zijingang Campus of Zhejiang University with 915 contestants from 350 teams of 77 universities in Zhejiang Province. The contest is supported by office of higher education of the ministry of education of Zhejiang Province and collegiate science and technology contest committee in Zhejiang, undertaken by Zhejiang University as secretariat of the contest committee for eight times. In 2003 ZJU took lead in organizing collegiate programming contest and invited 50 teams from 13 universities, on the basis of which it held the first contest in 2004 with 84 teams from 45 universities. In a short period the contest is attended by 305 teams from 77 universities which cover over 90% universities and colleges in Zhejiang Province. It is amazing with so many attending universities, wide coverage and proficient skills. In 2011 students from Zhejiang University were awarded as the champion of 35th ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest with a remarkable performance. At 7 am all contest teams assemble together before the contest field -- computer center of Zjingang in ZJU. At 9 am the opening ceremony is chaired by Mao Yiping, director of scientific research and discipline contest office in teaching research center of undergraduate school, attended by Chen Yue, member of collegiate programming contest committee in Zhejiang Province and deputy president of college of computer science and technology, Weng Kai, general umpire and teacher of college of computer science and technology; Wang Can of college of computer science and technology, head of technology group and Fei Lanlan, secretary of CYL committee of college of computer science and technology in ZJU. In the opening ceremony Prof. Chen Yue gives a brief speech, then Weng Kai proclaims the rules and attentions of the contest and next all contestants enter the computer room to get familiar with the environment and practice their skills. At noon with the sound of whistling resounding through the building, the ninth collegiate programming contest formally pulls its curtain. Contestants begin to carefully read the questions, communicate with each other in a low voice and program with volunteers walking back and forth through the corridor to send the drafts, the atmosphere tense and active and the contest going smoothly. With the progress of the contest programming becomes more and more difficult. Most contestants furrow their brows, reflecting or quickly type the keyboard to program and debug. And the balloons on their desk get more and more, 9 at most. At about 3 pm He Qinming, director of collegiate programming contest panel and deputy president of undergraduate school, Wan Jian, Wang Rangding, Wang Ming of the panel and Zhong Rongrong, deputy director of teaching research center of undergraduate school of ZJU come to the competition field to inspect, view and direct the contest and then go to on-the-spot viewing room to communicate with team leader and coach. According to the contest rules at 4 pm the rank is closed so as to provide suspense for the last hour. At 5 pm with general umpire blowing the whistle the five-hour-long contest of drastic tension and dramatic change comes to an end.At 7 pm the closing ceremony of the contest is held and awards are given in Theatre in Zijingang in ZJU, presided over by Zhong Rongrong, He Qinming, director of collegiate programming contest panel and deputy president of undergraduate school, Wan Jian, president of college of computer science and technology in Hangzhou Dianzi University, Prof. Chen Yue, deputy president of college of computer science and technology in ZJU, Wang Rangding, president of college of computer science and technology in Ningbo University and Wang Ming, deputy president of college of information and electronic engineering in Ningbo Dahongying University. First of all, Wan Jian gives a remarkable comment on the contest and then He Qinming delivers a speech that with the greater and great influence exerted by the contest, more and more teams take part and students are full of vigor, which significantly promotes the improvement of computer teaching and research in Zhejiang Province. Finally it is Prof. Chen Yue who reads the list of awarded students with “tired to death” from Zhejiang University of Technology ranks the first in the undergraduate group by answering 9 questions and “first team of Yuying” from Zhejiang Yuying College of Vocational Technology is awarded first prize in the vocational school group by answering 5 questions, both of which are also awarded special prize.For 9 years discipline contest is dedicated to innovation and the programming contest provides a practice platform for students in Zhejiang University to display their uniqueness and excellence. With words like science contest, fairness, justness, awareness of challenge, teamwork, innovativeness, programming skills, poise, devotion, honesty, cooperative innovation, intensiveness, participation and mutual learning permeated through the competition field, it plays an important role in cultivating and improving university students’ comprehensive quality. Since ZJU and HEC began to cooperate in collegiate practice teaching in October, 2011, communication has been conducted smoothly and successfully with the first team of students who undertake internship in HEC in a long term having begun their internship and graduate design by February, 2012. On March 29th, 2012 Chen Jin, deputy president of graduate school of ZJU leads the team to HEC, ending up with signing an agreement in jointly building practice education base and holding the ceremony of naming “ZJU-HEC collegiate practice education base”.HEC was founded in 1951, one of 53 key SOEs related to the lifeline of national security and economy directly under central management, being responsible for large- and medium-sized generating equipment R&D and being national R&D center of hydroelectric equipment engineering technology and national key laboratory of hydroelectric equipment approved by The Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China. In 2012 four students in ZJU prepare their graduate design under the mentors in HEC, who has already finished their opening speech of dissertation and a mid-term inspection of their graduate design has been jointly conducted by mentors in HEC and ZJU. Chen Jin encourages students to grasp the extraordinary opportunity to learn from mentors in HEC who are richly experienced and responsible, and strive for good performance while he learns about the strong research power of HEC and advanced research equipment by visiting HEC and listening to the introduction of the enterprise on the spot.
