It was of great delight to have been a exchange student in Georgetown University this summer.Even though we university students had already had a rather good master of English, it was still quite challenging for us in an English-speaking country especially you needed to think and speak from the foreigner's point. Not only did we need to catch up with the teachers as well as the classmates, but also we were required to transfer these things into something practical in the following reading tasks. Besides, class participation did serve as a rather important factor in your assessment, unlike universities in China, your ideas' interchanging with the teachers will weigh a lot. The two classes I attended were named Principles of Marketing and Macroeconomics, Macroeconomics was not so demanding compared to the other, but Principles of Marketing did require a quite good command of English thinking and speaking which made the learning process was painful but rewarding. We often wandered in the campus as well as outside the campus, Georgetown was a famous historical area, from where we could easily get access to the American customs. Still, given so many museums inn DC, we've got so lucky to visit them. Though time goes fast, but the memory in Georgetown University will be forever remembered. LIU Yiyue

This summer, I was fortunate enough to be a member of the summer school of Stellenbosch University in South Africa. It was the first time I travelled alone, and my destination was South Africa, the southern hemisphere where I knew very little. Before I arrived, I was full of tension and longing. When I came to school, contacting with the students from all over the world, I felt very substantial every day. I fell in love with this school, the city. My course was film and literature. It was a small class and we had a sofa in the classroom. Teacher Daniel was a humorous and knowledgeable gentleman, giving us chances to explore, to debate freely, to divergent thinking sparks. I was the only student whose native language wasn’t English, and my classmates helped me a lot. They were so nice and sincere. Thus I enjoyed the atmosphere where everyone cared about each other. On weekends, we went to all the famous sights of South Africa, where the sky was very blue and the sea was wide. I miss it. In the summer of 2018, I was lucky to have the opportunity to become a summer scholar in the University of Chicago. One month in Harris School of Public Policy expanded our vision and equipped us with professional knowledge and insights needed for our future studies and career development. Courses that I was especially interested in were quantitative analysis in public policy and introduction to programming in R. The former introduced us to the basic toolkit of policy analysis including sampling, hypothesis testing, regression and instrumental variables, and the latter taught us how to retrieve, clean, visualize, and analyze data. We also enjoyed extra-curricular activities outside campus. On Fridays, we were offered chances to visit American government to better understand working in the public realm, and we took advantage of the program to explore downtown Chicago. It was an unforgettable experience and further strengthened my determination to pursue advanced studies in public policy. ZHANG Yanru

Cambridge, a small town located near the Capital London of UK, is much more than the tiny word “town” could bury----but rather heaven for entrepreneurs and palace for intellectual talents. Blessed to set our feet on this holy piece of land, we were deeply immersed in that atmosphere full of academy, innovative and inspiration. We spent precious time studying at Cambridge from Jan.28th to Feb.9that the beginning of 2018. On the curriculum, a few renowned and knowledgeable professors gave lectures on varies aspects from starting to succeeding in entrepreneurship. Prof. Chris Loweintroduced the significance of Cambridge innovation initiatives and what entrepreneurship meant and requested.Dr. William Bains talked about fundamental accounting, fundraising and valuation, and showed us the tricks in elevator pitch.Dr. Stella Wooder began with Plans for start-ups, a huge demanding work concerning tools,Costs, budget and risk management etc., and ended with a small testing competition on identifying gaps and areas of risk in case studies, done in team work.In two very packed weeks we students got a huge amount and a lot of more formal teaching materials to take away. For leisure time we paid visits to malls around, other beautiful universities like Oxford, LSE etc., taking in the beautiful scenery as well as fully relaxing ourselves. It is curved to heart that nobody is born with a mind for business. Through professional learning can one be skilled, experienced and be motivated to become active entrepreneurs. In near future we can follow our dreams inestablishing our own businesses. Grateful thanks for the precious opportunities provided by Cambridge Innovation and Entrepreneurship Camp.DING Yuwen & ZHOU Xinwutong

During July 21 to August 18, 27 students from Zhejiang University were selected to attend the summer program held in UIUC. Specifically, 23 of us attended the Information science and Engineering Program(ISE), while 4 of us attended the Accounting and Finance Program(AF). We spent two weeks on campus studying and one week off campus travelling together with approximately 40 students from Beihang University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology.University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, founded in 1867, is one of the most well-known university in America, which is known as one of the members of the ‘Public Ivies’. UIUC’s engineering is of the highest rank in the United States and even around the world, and its computer, mechanical, electrical, civil engineering are among the top five in the United States.Students attending ISE program chose to take two classes among Control System, Network analysis and Artificial Intelligence, while students attending AF program took Accounting Theory and Financial Management, and each course took 16 hours to accomplish. Besides, several homework, quizzes and final reports were involved for validation. Control system mainly introduced classic control theory and modern control theory, which is quite similar to the course named automatic control in China. Network analysis informed us ways to analyze and evaluate different kinds of networks, which required us to master different software like UCINET, Gephi and Netlogo to help our analysis. In Artificial Intelligence class, the professor helped us to build up a preliminary understanding of artificial intelligence, and we learned different algorithm including search algorithm, game theory and deep learning. Accounting Theory class involved different projects, which should be completed by group cooperation. Usually, professor began with basic concepts of accounting, and gradually introduced specific situations in order to help us better understanding course contents. Financial management introduced much financial knowledge, for instance, calculation for Time Value of Money and CAPM model calculation, which is similar to the corporate finance course in Zhejiang University. In addition to study, we spent our spare time in physical exercise and social activities. For instance, we participated in different sports activities in the student activity and recreation center on campus every afternoon, enjoyed band performances and watched outdoor movies. Also, we tried different kinds of American food and learned some basic table manners and their eating habits, which partly differ from that in China. After two-weeks campus life, we travelled to Chicago, Washington DC and New York. And we visited famous scenic spots, museums and schools, like Princeton University and Columbia University. It is through tourism that we enhancedour better understandings of American life and culture. To sum up, just as the title suggests, UIUC is a fabulous university with different voices, where students have individual education. And attending the summer program in UIUC is an extraordinary experience, given that not only could we experience American campus life and American culture, but also we could really broaden our horizons to the outside world, which could be great treasure for our further development.ZENG Zhicheng

This summer, I was lucky to have the opportunity to be an exchange student in UC Berkeley. It was a challenge to live and study in an English-speaking country .We needed to adapt quickly to the all English classes and even the accent the professors speak with. Besides, unlike universities in China, there are many chances to express your idea and question the professor. Thus, we all tried to be active and speak English fluently. I attended the class named Competitive Strategy, and our professor emphasized much on our performance in class. In order to have something to say in the next day class, we had to read some long-page articles at night and analyze by ourselves. The process was painful but rewarding. We often walked in the campus in our leisure time and were amazed at the number of libraries. You can find libraries everywhere and every libraries differ in their styles of architecture. Lying on the grass, bathed in the brilliant sunshine, overlooking the Sather Tower, our stay in UC Berkeley was short but enjoyable. Though we have left, our exchange life in the cool summer of UC Berkeley will be remembered forever.SUN Siwei

2018 UCLA summer session C came to an end, and all the ZJU students returned from LA eventually. Now it’s time to have a brief review on the life abroad during the last six months in UCLA.Summer session group arrived in LA in the end of July, and everyone was in the exciting mood expecting the upcoming campus life. All the students settled into the diverse dormitories. To be honest, I was impressed by the facilities of the department. For example, Hedrick hall, which contained more than half of the students in session C, was in extraordinary adorable conditions. The staff at the front desk were considerate and sweet; the cleaners were dedicated to their job so that you may find sufficient sources available no matter the restroom, study room or the rest lounge. Everyday after lecture, student could have a seat in the study room on the first floor, and there was always a seat suit for you. Although we probably didn’t know our roommates before, they were usually warm-hearted and helpful. In addition to the well-equipped dormitories and study rooms, there were also many well-stocked libraries and fitness center with advanced equipment and devices. So, the off-campus life could be very delightful and relaxing.Back to our daily school life, what made us impressive was that the relationship between the professor and students, which was extremely intimate. In the classroom, the professor was no longer a very authoritative person, but a closely friend with us. After lecture, the professor always sent e-mails reminding us important tips or inviting us into numerous clubs or internships. Another nonnegligible role was TA, the teacher assistant. Most of them were the students who were currently the graduate students in UCLA. In discussion time, the TA wiould crystalize the essence of the concepts in lecture and help us in finishing assignments after class. In addition, every professor and TA had their certain office hour, so we were free to visit them when we need any help in studying. When refering to the life abroad, the most significant part could be travelling. Since our students were separated into different locations around the university, there was a difficulty to arrange group travelling. So, we usually went on journey in small teams. In the Universal Studio, we saw the original scene in many famous movies; Disneyland was the place we recalled all the sweet memories in our childhood; In the Getty center, we were obsessed with the artistic atmosphere and explore all the European cultures at only one glance. On the Santa Monica beach we sat together watching the sunset and hearing the waves; In San Diego, we overlooked the Atlantic Ocean on the cliffs and captured every moment as a treasure. On the voyages, we broadened our view and had a big harvest on friendship. We are really grateful for this program providing us a chance to have a taste on foreign lifestyle and academic atmosphere. We do benefit from it a lot.ZHANG Kai

On 20th July, a group of 29 pre-selected undergraduates set out for the 2018 Global Immersion Programme (GIP) at Cambridge University. The GIP is an academic programme between Cambridge University and Zhejiang University that covers an array of cutting-edge topics. This programme encourages deep thinking and celebrates speculative spirit though active questioning. All 8 courses of the 2018 GIP were delivered by heavyweight professors and senior lecturers from various disciplines at Cambridge University – Dr. Gill on the history and prospects of Cambridge high-tech industry; Dr. Scott on green energy and its development status in UK; Dr. Wilson-Lee on Shakespeare; Dr.Impullitti on Brexit, globalisation and international trade; Prof.Burnard on creativity; Dr. Daly on the operation of the English legal system; Prof.Daugman on artificial intelligence and Dr. Yin on Chinese business and the challenge of the digital age. Outside the lecture room, the 29 students deeply study in St. John’s innovation centre and learned the operating philosophy and principles of the incubator. In addition to the intense and brain-storming courses, the Programme Manager Miss Li Jinzhao from the Cambridge China Centre arranged a spectrum of cultural activities for everyone. Guided by several Cambridge students, the group travelled all over Cambridge landmarks. As a break, the students also went down to London for the Buckingham Palace's ceremony and the British Museum. By the end of the programme, each small group presented their own venture project. All 29 students learned a lot from the intense collision of ideas. As the Programme Director Dr. Eden Yin mentioned, contemporary youngsters should have a sense of crisis and a spirit of innovation, and take on the responsibility of building a better society.
